Learning Awards 2021 Finalist

Mark Burns · October 20, 2020 · Leave a Comment

Delighted to discover today, that my work in partnership with Accrington Academy and educational charity Curious Minds North West on ‘The Uncertainty Principle’ has been shortlisted for the Learning Awards 2021 in the People Development Programme of the Year (Public Sector) category. The prestigious awards are organised by The Learning Performance Institute.

The People Development Programme of the Year Award is presented to a public sector or not-for-profit enterprise that has implemented a proactive, large-scale People Development Programme for their employees – whether to a significant target group or enterprise-wide – that can show demonstrable business impact and performance improvement for the organisation

The core achievement of the programme has been to utilise the operational devastation caused by Coronavirus as the starting point to re-vision how the Academy could impact on the community it serves, as well as those who work there.  Not only that, but analyse how all members of staff can actively contribute to this journey through their thinking processes and learning mindset.  Indeed, without the thinking time that the programme provided, then an already overloaded organisation may well have crumbled in the face of unprecedented challenges.

Through developing the resilience and well-being of staff at the academy, they were better able to hold an emotionally stable umbrella over the children and their families as they returned in September.  Given the ongoing challenges that Coronavirus is presenting, the shared language and strategies that staff are using e.g. focus only the things you can control and influence, has helped their scaffold their well-being.

The famous Eric Hoffer quote sums up the lasting impact of the programme on Accrington Academy, ‘In times of change learners inherit the earth; while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.’  The programme has enhanced the conditions for learning dialogue by enhancing processing capacity, shared clarity and relational trust.

Congratulations to all of the finalists across all the categories.
